Cabinet Debunks State Asset Swap Rumors: Canal is a Red Line

The Egyptian Cabinet has officially clarified that recent social media and news reports regarding proposals to transfer state assets—specifically the Suez Canal—to the Central Bank of Egypt in exchange for domestic debt settlement are entirely personal viewpoints and do not represent government policy.

The government noted that such asset-swap ideas were thoroughly examined within broader public debt management strategies, but were deemed unfeasible since asset transfers among state entities do not reduce aggregate national liabilities. Emphasizing a firm stance, the Cabinet stated that the Suez Canal is an irreplaceable strategic national asset tied directly to Egypt’s national security and sovereignty.

Finally, the government reaffirmed its commitment to a comprehensive public debt reduction framework focusing on primary surpluses, enhanced public revenues, and sustainable returns on state assets.
